Ian Murrell
Ian Murrell is a native of Vandalia, Illinois and has been praised for his “Powerful, resonant baritone” and “commanding stage presence” by Indiana Public Media. He is an up-and-coming singer with experience in performing opera, musical theater, operetta, and oratorio.
Mr. Murrell’s operatic role credits include Sharpless in a shortened studio rendition of Madama Butterfly with Indianapolis Opera, Belcore in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore with Indiana University Opera Theatre, Le Marquis de la Force in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites (IUOT), Enrico in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor (IUOT), Harry Bailey in Jake Heggie’s “It’s A Wonderful Life,” and Ned Keene in Benjamin Britten’s “Peter Grimes” (IUOT). Mr. Murrell has also portrayed Yamadori in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in a staged production with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and Riff in a concert version of Bernstein’s “West Side Story” under the baton of Maestro Alfred Savia. Equally at home on the concert stage, Mr. Murrell has sung as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Saint-Saëns’s Christmas Oratorio, Britten’s Cantata Misericordium, and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella suite. Ian is an alumnus of the Asheville Lyric Opera young artist program, the Aspen Music Festival and School, Chautauqua Opera Company, and the Florentine Opera Company. He is a graduate of the University of Evansville and with a masters from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
For the 2024 season, Ian will be playing the role of Perseus in Thompson Street Opera Company’s “We’ve Got Our Eye On You.” He will also return to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for performances in Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony. This Summer, Ian will perform in Mozart’s Idomeneo at the Ravinia Festival and present a recital of music by Ravel, Schumann, and Vaughan Williams.
